![]() Mateo Morelli. The mere mention of his name is enough to strike fear into the hearts of grown men. The most ruthless crime lord in Chicago isn’t a man you dare cross. But when the second most feared crime lord shows up on my doorstep the night of my husband’s wake, he doesn’t give me much of a choice. My late husband owed Antonio Castellanos a lot of money, but the magnanimous boss is gonna do me a solid—I get to pay my debt, and keep my daughter alive. All I have to do is one little favor. That favor? Seduce and kill Mateo Morelli. **PLEASE NOTE: These are not standalones. Mateo’s story starts in Accidental Witness (and continues in Once Burned). If you don’t read Accidental Witness first, you will not have the background you need on his character and you won’t follow his story very easily. *** ![]() Loved it! I really like a strong heroine and Meg definitely stood her ground against Mateo. Surviving Mateo pretty much starts following Vince and Mia's story in the first book. There were no cliffhangers as such but there was doubt over how Mia and Vince's relationship would grow with Mateo's manipulative games with Mia. Meg first meets Mateo following the death of her husband, she is approached by rival mafia guys of Mateo who tell her that her deceased husband had gambling debt and to pay them she had to seduce and poison Mateo. Not only has Mateo got a reputation for being ruthless but he is gift observant, paranoid and trusts no one. Meg surprisingly warms to Mateo when he takes her on a date, she is attracted to him and can't go through with the plan but Mateo already suspected her and discovers the poison. Mateo likes Meg and instead of killing her has her living in his home with her daughter. I was highly entertained by both these characters, the story flowed well and had a great balance of hotness, humor and angst. I am really enjoying this series and the characters. It is recommended that you read the first book to get the history on Mateo and his involvement in Mia and Vince's story but I do not necessary as Mia does explain her past in this story while talking to Meg. In summary a good Mafia read, Mateo really does show his true self without the barriers in this book and he liberates himself, I also preferred Meg's maturer character to Mia's for that reason I enjoyed this story more than the first.
