Iâve never had a place to call home.
Growing up in foster care, I learned not to get attached.
The day Easton Chadwick walks into my life, my sense of self-preservation falls by the wayside.
When Iâm in his arms, itâs easy to believe in the fairy tale. Then, tragedy strikes, serving as a soul-crushing reminder that nothing lasts forever.
Suffocated by fear, I pack my bags, leaving Easton and the town of Maplewood Falls behind.
Several months later, I come face-to-face with the man who still owns nearly every part of me, but one night fueled by alcohol and bad decisions doesnât change anything.
At least, thatâs what I tell myself â¦
Until those two pink lines appear.
For the first time in my life, Iâm willing to lay my heart on the line for a family and a place to call home.
Because home is where love lives.

âWhat are you so afraid of? You think that I donât know you?â I closed the distance between us and reached for her hand. âYou bite the tip of your index finger when youâre nervous. You eat peanut butter straight from the jar and hum when you lick the spoon. Family gatherings make you uncomfortable. And youâre stubborn as hell.â
Emotion swam in her green irises.
I cupped her cheeks between my palms. âI love you with all that I am.â
âPlease ⦠donât do this.â She blinked back the threat of tears.
âI need the words. Tell me you donât want me. That you donât love me. Because if you can do that, Iâll walk out that door, and I wonât ever look back.â
Time ticked by as I waited for the words. The urge to press my mouth to hers burned through me, but I needed an answer.
Molly closed her eyes, inhaling deeply, and when she opened them again, it was as though a switch had been flipped. She grasped my wrists, removing my hands from her face, and then took a step back and straightened her spine.
I braced myself for impact.
Her face was devoid of emotion as she delivered the blow. âI donât want you. I donât love you.â
Pain ripped through me. I dropped my head to the ground, giving it a shake before I looked back at her. âYou win.â I gave her my back and made my way to the door. âMolly,â I said, reaching for the handle.
âY-yeah?â Her voice cracked, but I didnât turn around.
Anger and agony twisted inside me, twining into a thickly corded rope. âI never want to see you again.â
